LEGAL REQUIREMENT OF STORAGE SYSTEM INSPECTION

Regular inspection of the storage system is a legal requirement according to 'The Workplace Health Safety and Welfare Regulations' and ' The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)'. What is more, regular inspections are required to maintain safety in the workplace and prevent and minimise the effects of accidents.

The Rack Inspection should follow a hierarchical approach using 3 levels of inspections as follows:

1. Damage inspection by Warehouse Operatives

Warehouse Staff and Forklift Truck Operators should be trained to report all damage immediately it occurs to ensure appropriate action is taken to ensure the safety of Operatives and others.

2. Weekly inspections as a visual check from ground level

Regular documented inspections of all racking should be undertaken by Warehouse Supervisors at weekly intervals to identify, and act upon, any damage. This inspection should generally be carried out weekly, although the frequency may be varied to suit particular operating conditions. This inspection should be carried out by a suitably trained individual (Rack Safety Awareness Course).

3. Annual or bi-annual inspections by a 'Technically Competent Person

This inspection must be carried out by a 'technically competent person such as SEMA Approved Rack Inspector (SARI).

PROCESS OF THE PALLET RACKING INSPECTION

1. The Inspector will report to the site contact for induction and familiarization with the place.
2. Staff must be informed about the inspection, the presence of the Inspector walking around and within the aisles and details of what would be involved.
3. The route of the inspection will be agreed upon with the site contact. The inspection will be carried out from floor level.
4. The Inspection will be carried out following the SEMA Code of Practice for Rack Inspections.
5. On completion of the inspection, the site contact will be de-briefed by the Inspector providing details of any immediate or Health & Safety issues. In some cases, a report may be provided immediately and left on site.

6. The inspector might take photos as the evidence required for the report.

7. The Client will receive the final report within 5-7 working days on the condition of making payment in full.
